Youth Opportunities

Overview

The Youth Opportunities! program at Port Jobs was part of Seattle's Youth Opportunity Movement (YO!), an integrated service system designed to equip under-served youth in Seattle's enterprise communities with educational tools and career opportunities necessary to succeed in the 21st century. Port Jobs was a Youth Opportunities! program partner from the fall of 2000 until February 2002.

In Detail

Port Jobs was one of over thirty-five program partners for Youth Opportunities. For its part, Port Jobs educated youth and case managers on ways to overcome transportation barriers to work and about career opportunities in transportation-related industries. Port JOBS also educated youth about opportunities in the construction trades and other trades- related occupations.

Transportation
To help youth overcome transportation barriers that may prevent them from getting to work or education and training opportunities, Port Jobs:

  • Offered driver's license education workshops that describe how to get and keep a driver's license;
  • Provided funding support to help YO youth take driver's education classes to get their driver's license;
  • Conducted re-licensing workshops and assistance from Seattle Municipal Court and other nonprofit organizations that help youth get a suspended license back.

To educate youth about transportation-related career opportunities, Port Jobs:

  • Hosted site visits to local transportation employers such as Metro;
  • Hosted orientations at Port Jobs' Airport Jobs office that outline career opportunities at Sea-Tac International Airport;
  • Connected youth to transportation-related internships.

Construction apprenticeships
Port Jobs worked with the Youth Program Manager from Apprenticeship and Non-traditional Employment for Women and Men (ANEW) to deliver apprenticeship services which included:

  • Conducting introduction to apprenticeships workshops for youth, case managers, and high school guidance counselors;
    conducting a tour of apprenticeship programs and workplaces for youth and case managers;
  • Holding a construction and apprenticeship career fair open to youth;
    conducting a hands-on construction workshop for youth;
  • Placing youth in apprenticeships, pre-aprenticeships or trades-related employment and internships.
