"I helped a single mother of two, working full time, making about $19,000 per year. She'll receive a $6,000 refund. Last year she paid $600 to file her taxes with a commercial tax preparer. I felt really good that we were able to help her for free through this program." – Volunteer income tax preparer
Overview
Port Jobs, in partnership with United Way of King County, provides free tax preparation services in the Airport Jobs office at Sea-Tac Airport on selected days during tax filing season (January through April).
All are welcome, but services focus on people who need assistance filing their returns and those who may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
In Detail
The King County Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Campaign helps people keep more of what they work for, reduces the risk of homelessness and increases family economic success in low-income communities in King County. Services include:
- Free, quality tax preparation services, with an emphasis on low-income tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.
- Information and access to public benefits.
- Access to financial services and asset building opportunities.
Taxes are prepared by IRS trained and certified volunteers. Multilingual tax preparers are available at several sites to serve customers who do not speak English.
The service is completely free, and clients will avoid paying high preparation fees and "rapid refund loans" that often drastically reduce refunds. Returns are filed electronically for a fast refund, usually in 10-12 days.
Tax customers can also sign up for certain public benefits and learn about opportunities they have to make the most of their tax returns through opening or expanding savings accounts, repairing their credit and improving financial and budgeting skills.
Additional free tax preparation sites are located throughout the Seattle area, making them easily accessible to any taxpayer. For more information, visit United Way's website.
